Most adverse food reactions are caused by intolerance, but it is food allergy that has become a major health concern.

In Europe it is estimated that up to 4% of adults suffer from some kind of food allergy (similar figures in the U.S), whilst reports suggest higher levels of up to 7.5% in children.

Researchers estimate that up to 45% of the UK population suffers food allergies or intolerances according to Allergy UK. These are food reactions that can cause or complicate health problems.

It is estimated 12.2 million people in England have been diagnosed with an allergy related illness.

The largest recorded allergy increase is in peanut allergy but there are also increases related to eggs, milk, shellfish, other nuts as well as many other foods.

Children usually "outgrow" allergies to milk, eggs, soybean products and wheat. However, people rarely outgrow allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.

Most people with food allergies are allergic to fewer than 4 foods, however food intolerances tend to be less specific.

An undetected allergy or intolerance can lead to a later cross over reaction to other foods.
